Cardinal Spellman," in black ink. Original envelope on beige paper included. Envelope has a purple 3-cent Alfred E. Smith stamp on front. Back flap of the envelope has printed red lettering that reads, "Cardinal's Residence," with accompanying New York street address. Letter datelined March 25, 1948. Envelope postmarked March 26, 1948. Letter: 6 1/2" x 8 3/4." Envelope: 4 1/2" x 6 3/4." One page. Letter is virtually pristine and intact except for slight offsetting from the seal and a horizontal fold line at center (likely original). Envelope is very clean and intact but has some darkening and a few chips and wrinkles. Letter is Fine. Envelope is Near Fine. Letter with envelope is Fine overall. Francis Joseph Spellman (1889-1967) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. He served as the 6th Archbishop of New York from 1939 until his passing in 1967 and as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston from 1932-1939. Spellman became a cardinal in 1946. Spellman was a friend of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and had considerable influence in realm of American politics. He was an outspoken critic of Communism, supported the Vietnam War, and was very vocal on a number of contemporary social issues of the time. He also supported the presidency of Richard Nixon over John F. Kennedy. This letter is addressed to Norman Unger of New York. Spellman writes, "Dear Mr. Unger: Thank you very much for your kind and useful gift which I deeply appreciate. With very best wishes and kindest regards, I am, Very sincerely yours, F. Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York.". Signed by Author(s).
