A collection of contemporary verses gathered by Carlo Spadazzi to commemorate the wedding of Venanzio Varano (died 1814) and Paolina Dolfin on 7 July 1807. The verses were also designed to provide any children from the union with an understanding of their princely heritage; the Varano family, originally from Ferrara, were the rulers of the town of Camerino in Le Marche, and the Dolfin were an old patrician family of Venice. Most of the poems are attributed to various friends, though a few are anonymous or the author only identified by initials. Most are in Italian, with a few in Latin, and many are based on classical poetic forms and models. Many of the authors are from Ferrara, several are churchmen, and two are women ('Signora A.S.Ferrarese accademica Ariostea', Lucrezia Locatelli of Venice). Several were members of various academies, including the Accademia dei Filopatridi of Savignano (Emilia-Romagna), the Accademia Ariostea of Ferrara, and the Colonia Virgiliana of Mantua. A few years later, Paolina gave birth to a child called Rodolfo, an event commemorated in another celebratory poem printed in Ferrara in 1810. Rare: no copies traced in the US or UK. The British Library has another (shorter) volume by Domenico Michiel, with the same imprint, containing another literary commemoration of the wedding. Language: Italian.

Eleonora a se…guito dell'unione con Ferdinando III divenne Imperattrice del Sacro Romano Impero e Regina di Germania. Ferdinando venne a mancare nel 1657 ma Eleonora continuò il suo progetto di promozione delle arti e lettere. L'opera, scritta 15 anno dopo, descrive condizioni e privilegi delle vedove analizzando le leggi civili e morali che si applicano alle vedove illustri. Marca editoriale al frontespizio: Sulla riva del mare un cane addenta un murice, sullo sfondo un'altura e due imbarcazioni al largo. In una cornice motto: Ex morsu purpura. Testatine e iniziali xilografiche ornate. Testo a doppia colonna. Tagli marmorizzati. In ottime condizioni. The work is dedicated to Eleonora Maddalena Gonzaga-Nevers (Mantua, 1628 Vienna, 1686) daughter of Charles, Duke of Nevers (1609-1631) and Maria Gonzaga. Eleonora became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire and Queen of Germany, marrying Ferdinand III (with whom she had four children). After Ferdinand's death in 1657, she continued his work of promoting arts and letters. The treatise was dedicated to her in 1672, when she had been a widow for 15 years. Condition and privileges of widows: a treatise that explains the civil and moral laws that apply to illustrious widows.
