Jacques Germain Soufflot, l'un des plus grands architectes du 18e siècle en France, fut l'un des premiers représentants de la nouvelle école d'architecture néoclassique, née en France, où des motifs classiques avaient commencé à apparaître dans les dessins à la fin du règne de Louis XVI dans le but de réintroduire les gravitas de l'architecture romaine après l'indulgence du Rococo. Il est surtout connu pour la conception du Panthéon à Paris (1756-1797), exemple majeur de l'architecture de la fin du XVIIIe siècle et l'un des points forts du Grand Tour d'Europe. Le bâtiment a été conçu comme une église dédiée à Sainte Geneviève avant d'être transformé en un mémorial dédié aux personnages célèbres. Contemporain de Claude Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806), Soufflot était également fasciné par la légèreté brillante de l'architecture gothique. Dans la conception du Panthéon, il utilisait des techniques médiévales pour atteindre des objectifs néoclassiques. Un design extrêmement influent, il a contribué à populariser les designs classiques (en particulier l'architecture grecque) dans le Nouveau Monde.
