Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 27 cm, 233 pp, ills (some colour). Lots 300-1092. From the introduction: "The family of La Rochefoucauld had been established in the annals of France for over six hundred years when Francis, the sixth duke, published his Maxims in the middle of the seventeenth century. It was, however, by his marriage to Jeanne-Charlotte du Plessis Liancourt that the family acquired the titles and estates of Liancourt and La Roche-Guyon, situated on the Seine west of Paris, in addition to their old hereditary lands near Angoulême. The library reflects the literary achievements of the sixth duke and members of his distinguished circle, the closest of which were successively Madame de Chevreuse, duchesse de Longueville and Madame de La Fayette. Acquisitions to the library by his successors show a fascination with voyages and travel, although until the latter half of the eighteenth-century the dukes served the Crown at home in military campaigns and in the offices of grand veneur and grand maître de la garde-robe. The history of France, its great offices, nobility, and orders of chivalry are therefore prominent in the library." Neatly but regrettably colour-coded by the previous owner, a bookseller, with 6 coloured tape bands around the spine, otherwise Good.

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 27 cm, 383 pp, colour ills. 444 lots. Near Fine.

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1987). 1987 1st edition. 4to (215 x 275mm). Pp c200, pages unnumbered. Colour photographs of guns throughout. Red cloth, upper board and spine titled in gilt. Very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. This is the catalogue of an auction of historical firearms which took place at Sotheby's in Monaco, on Monday 7th December, 1987. "Charles Draeger, who died in 1977, was a truly private collector. Shown and known in it entirety to only a few contemporaries with similar interests, the collection in virtually unknown to the acknowledged latter-day authorities and students of arms and is, therefore, worthy of study far beyond the scope of this catalogue." Charles Draeger was a member of the firm Draeger Freres which specialised in art printing and "became noted for the fine reproduction of the works of Dufy, Matisse, Dali and Picasso amongst many others. The technical finesse necessary in his work influenced his choice of specimens now that he was able to collect in earnest and the impressive results may be seen in this catalogue. It is obvious that, with very few exceptions, he bought with care, taste, knowledge and with good advice. He was also competetive, securing many pieces greatly desired by other serious and wealthy collectors. Nevertheless, the range of values is remarkable, as is the coverage; 2,500 francs to perhaps more than 500,000 francs, the late 16th century to the early 20th century and matchlock to semi-automatic pistols." Text in English, the French title notwithstanding. .
