Original green cloth with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece in second volume. In the last years of his life Jacob Mann (1888-1940) embarked on the study of one of the most difficult branches of Hebrew literature, the Midrashim. In his work, "The Bible as read and preached in the Old Synagogue," he tried to establish the dependence of the Midrashim from the chapters of the Torah and from the haftarot which were read on the Sabbath on cycles of three and one-half years respectively. The first volume of the book was published in 1940. Material left by Mann for the second volume was prepared for publication by Isaiah Sonne; after the latter's death the work was continued by Victor Reichert; it appeared in 1966. Text in English and Hebrew. Slight wear to covers. Inscriptions from previous owners on front free endpapers. Overall in good+ condition. Volume I was owned by Morton M. Applebaum, a prominent Reform rabbi, who served on the Executive Board of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and was on Hebrew Union College's Board of Governors.…

In English with a few articles in Hebrew in some issues. Goodle's AI thins that there are 27 volumes, but this is due to some sloppy cataloging on the part of one book dealer selling the first eight volumes and then counting the individual issues as volumes. I have not seen Volume myself, but I have seen the cover illustrated on Google Books. Herb Zafren who had taken over editing the journal passed away during production of Volume 20. It was well enough underway that people were willing to complete it. Likewise, the existing momentum from Zafren's leadership probably carried things along enough so that Volume 21 was completed, but that does appear to really be the end.…

Isaiah Sonna (Sonne Zana), (1887 -1960), was a Hebrew historian and American Jewish bibliographer. Zena was born in Galicia. His surname is derived from the word Sonne, sun in German. Zana's cousin was the famous Hebrew poet Avraham ben Yitzhak (Sonna).
