See his entry, and those of his father and Cooke, in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 16mo. In fair condition, lightly aged, with dab or red wax to one corner, and part of another corner torn away, presumably in breaking open the seal. Folded diagonally for postage. Addressed to 'My dear Mr Cooke' (the recipient's identity is beyond doubt)…and signed 'Richd Westmacott'. His conscience will not let him 'rest under a doubt - and the 5 or 6 bits of Joy growing up in front of my window will plague me every time I look at them if I fancy either of them there sprouting unfairly come by.' He asks him not to think him 'over punctilious then in sending you the price of 20 3.' In any case he is 'still much indebted; for that which was a poor mangy-looking wall is now pretty well covered'. He ends with 'Compts to the Ladies'.
[John Henry Robinson, RA, eminent line engraver noted for his portraits.] Autograph Letter Signed ('J. H. Robinson') to 'Mr Cooke' (the artist Edward William Cooke), on personal matters including Conrad Cooke's health, and plans to meet.

See the entries for Robinson and Cooke in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, folded twice. Addressed to 'My dear Mr Cooke'. Cooke's 'friendly note' about the time he 'proposed setting out for Deal' was received on the Thursday, and the Robinsons are 'glad indeed to hear that your dear Mother is again restore…d to her usual health'. The Robinsons think that 'change of occupation & fresh air together, may have the desired effect both as regards yourself & your son Conrad'. The present season has been a 'trying' one, and Robinson gives a brief description of his own indisposition. He hopes that he can meet Cooke 'on Thursday week, the day before the private view'. A reference to 'Mr & Mrs Cope' follows. Robinson is sorry that the 'programme' Cooke has 'sketched' leaves 'little chance of our seeing you before you return from Stratford'. He ends by informing Cooke that his wife is 'pretty well'. Conrad Cooke's entry in Grace's Guide stresses his electrical work (he designed and installed first electric light on the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament) and his early promotion of the telephone.

A total of 46pp., mostly on 4to Mtotohovu letterheads. In fair condition, aged and worn. From the Meynell family papers. In the first letter he describes his preparations for an elephant shoot on the Serengeti: 'I a taking a 400 elephant gun a 300 high velocity gun, and a shot gun. My escort consists of a gun bearer, cook, tent…boy lorry driver & skinner.' Of the participants in the '"Ngoma" native dance games' he writes: 'they really were awful, covered in red & yellow clay or mud - they really did look maniacs & I am sure are more than half Savages'. In the second letter, which is sixteen pages long, he gives a journal account, dated from 3 to 19 September 1932, of his 'adventures on safari'. This is preceded by a description of each of his six main servants, the first being 'John A German Swahili half cast my gun bearer guide & interpreter - a very fine specimen immensely strong, very willing to do his duty & work with no about it'. The entry for 12 September is typical: 'Nothing was seen in the morning from 6-12. Started again at 3 to a high hill which we scaled & found on the top a park like country - trees & grass much greener, here having startled an old Rhino from his bed, we saw a magnificent Kudu on a ridge next to ours, being divided from it by a dry full of thorns & creepers & thick bushes. I knew he had seen us so I shot at him, the bullet passing between his horns & hitting the tank behind him. I lowed the 300 sight & hit him next shot - he hunched up & slowly sank to the ground got up only to fall again. I thought he was done but after leaving a boy to watch, we charged through the thicket to find him gone, the boy shouting that he was on the further hill, so we dashed there - no sign of him, nor could we find his spoor or blood. We hunted till dark & were up there by dawn next morning to see if the vultures could find him - alas no! He is theh best trophy of all, owing to his scarceness hardiness & keen sight & smell. So you can imagine how disappointed I was & still am.' At the end of the safari his 'bag' includes a lion, a zebra, an Eland bull and a wildebeest. The third letter describes his activities in Orange Free State. The fourth letter, written from on board ship, reports that he is 'going to Kenya again taking Aunt Molly up there to see her niece'; he discusses South African politics ('Smuts brilliant as he is, is no politician tho' possibly the best Statesman in the World, while Hertzog is a very able party man'). With the fifth letter he is back in Mtotohovu, going on a trip 'up into the hills' with 'Tommy'. In the last letter he gives an account of the trip, which begins with a stay with 'Major & Mrs Lead at Magindi', and then to Usambana. He ends by expressing the desire to return to Shamba to 'slay' what he regards as his buffalo: 'Alas I cannot get a Rhino which I really want as I can't get another licence for a year having had one already'.

2pp, 12mo. Bifolium, endorsed 'Clarke' on reverse of second leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded three times. The letter begins: 'My dear Webster, | Charles Kean has requested me to give him information respecting Theatres in England, in which it is probable he may form engagements on his return from America, a…s he wishes his plans to be arranged if possible previous to his departure from the United States, so as he may see his way clearly on his arrival in England.' He asks whether it would answer Webster's purpose 'to make any proposal to him'. Kean's 'new Play by Lovel [i.e. George William Lovell], the Wife's Secret, is effective I understand and the Play was written for Kean and Mrs. Kean, but the latter I learn is the feature.' Clarke will write to Kean 'in a few days and I shall have much pleasure in making any communication to him you may wish. His list of parts as well as Mrs. Keans is considerably extended sicne their marriage and you can best judge whether this fact may have attraction.' Clarke trusts that 'the Haymarket with its twin sister, the Adelphi are prospering', and his wife joins with him 'in best regards to the Managers of each establishment'. He ends with 'the Season's Compliments', and in a postscript thanks him 'for the Observers you send me'. In the event the Keans made a highly successful return to the Haymarket.

A son of Sir George Edward Knox, Gordon Daniell Knox was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, before going into journalism. He served as deputy editor of the Times of India, and was the author of several works of popular science. The letter and questionnaire are on separate pieces of paper, pinned together. Each 1p, 4to. In fair… condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: Circular letter, 9 November 1909. Twenty-three lines of text, beginning: 'Dear Sir, / I am sending a copy of "The Standard" for the 1st of this month to all Fellows of the Royal Society.' He discusses the arrangement of the paper, expressing a hope that signed articles, such as 'the one written by Dr. Miers', will be published, along with educational and scientific news. He will be 'greatly obliged' if the recipient 'can see your way to answering the enclosed questions', as he wants 'to be able to explain to the Universities and to the Learned Societies that I have asked these questions of the Fellows of the Royal Society, and to inform them as to the replies I have received'. TWO: Questionnaire. Three numbered questions, with gaps for answers, beginning with '(1) Do you consider it desirable that scientific matters should be treated to the ordinary news of the day?'.

All three items good, on lightly-aged paper. All bifoliums. Letter One (1 July 1901): 12mo, 4 pp. 42 lines. He is pleased to have received Childers' life of his father (published that year). 'I knew your Father well, [.] I was in the House in the Parliaments of 68 & 80 when he had his most serious work'. Praises his 'amazing plu…ck in going out as he did to Australia [Childers was first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne] & in his conduct there in the early days & during the gold discoveries time, the story of which in his letters is very curious'. He is interested to learn that he 'had Jewish blood in his veins'. He finds it 'evident that he was very doubtful as to Gladstone's wisdom on several points & in that I agree with him'. He believes that, though 'most anxious to help Ireland', he was not 'really happy about Home Rule', wanting to 'separate the Imperial from the Local', which 'could not be done'. Ends: 'Where should we have been in 99, if we had given Ireland over to an Irish Parlmt in 93?' Letter Two (4 July 1901): 12mo, 4 pp. 33 lines. Having received Childers' reply, he is pleased he wrote. Childers' 'Jewish blood' is 'very interesting to me'. Praises Disraeli's comments on the subject in his biography of Lord George Bentinck - 'a most interesting book & written by a most remarkable specimen of that famous nation'. Attacks Gladstone's handling of the Home Rule question. The recipient is 'right that Gladstone acted in a hurry [.] but he did more - He broke faith with his old friends to whom in Septr 1885 he sent a message utterly opposed to the plans which he developed, even before the Election of that year. He was not straight & he had his reward. And he destroyed the Liberal party. - Where is it now?' Letter Three (8 July 1901): 12mo, 3 pp. 31 lines. He thanks him for 'the Copy of that very remarkable letter - It does the Father credit'. Until the recent case of 'Mr J. E. Backhouse of Darlington' he had 'never heard before of a boy being made a Baronet'. He does not 'altogether agree with your history as to 79-80 - I remember well saying after that terrible Afghan disaster, at end of 79, that it would finish the Govmt - that & the Zulu war were too much for the Electors.'.
