Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Foxing to edges. Good-plus in used dust-wrapper. "The British Ornithologists' Club was founded in 1892 and its B…ulletin started publication at the same time. Over the years, the Bulletin has had a startlingly important influence in the world of ornithology - particularly taxonomy. In a sample of 100 species that had, over the last hundred years, been recognised as new to science, it was discovered that 49 of them had first been announced in its pages. But the Bulletin was not just devoted to taxonomy - exploration, migration, ecology, behaviour, conservation, as well as the British list have all been covered in its pages. And yet the Bull remains relatively unknown save only to the members of the B.O.C. Its regular readers prize its contents above most better known ornithological journals. The purpose of this anthology is to give all birders a chance to savour some of the wonderful stories that have over the last hundred years appeared in its pages. Where appropriate, modern experts have added commentary. This book captures the essential flavour of British ornithology. It is scholarly, highly entertaining and above all shaped by the eccentric and often authoritarian personalities of the members of the B.O.C. - F.C. Selous, R. Bowdler-Sharpe, P.L. Sclater, the extraordinary Col. R. Meinertzhagen, and many more." .

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has b…een the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Edited by J W Powell. (List of Publications of the Bureau of American Ethnology pgs 5-6) From the library of David H Snow. 1st edition. Although classified by most conventional texts, John Wesley Powell always maintained that he was not an adventure or an explorer. He considered himself a scientist, motivated by a desire for knowledge and to further the progress of human kind. However, Powell did live a busy and active life as a military leader, the first navigator of the Colorado River, and director of the United States Geological Survey. His accounts from navigating the Colorado River earned him early fame. Due to his compassion toward Native Americans he was elevated to director of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology in which he continued until his death. His work on the Irrigation Survey for the western United States, although never fully realized, lead to the establishment of river gauging stations and preliminary work toward storage and utilization of river water for irrigation and prevention of floods and overflows. In 1979 the highway salvage program of the Laboratory of Anthropology expanded beyond highway salvage projects. Under the direction of David H. Snow, it was reorganized as the Research Section of the Laboratory of Anthropology. The change guaranteed that the program had a dynamic role in the active profession of archaeology, that it continued to add to the Lab's research collections, and that publications on projects continued to be produced. By 1984 the Research Section staff had outgrown its location in the Laboratory of Anthropology. Along with the Laboratory's archaeological research collection of almost ten million artifacts, the Research Section moved to new offices in downtown Santa Fe. Condition: David Snow's signature on front end paper, light rubbing to back hinge, corners bumped, else a very good.
