Probable early reprint. xxiv, 563 pages. Hardcover: H 20.25cm x L 13.75cm. Blue dust jacket rubbed and soiled with some nicks and tears as well as slight bumping at edges; rear flap's bottom corner creased. .Lilac cloth with stamped orange lettering to spine and front board, slight bumping at spine ends and tips of board corners. Several black ink stains at fore-edges fractionally affecting a few leaves at margins; past owner's ink inscription at top of front free endpaper; light toning to endpapers; interior pages are otherwise clean. Rear hinge was cracked but now repaired with archival glue and binding quite firm. Else a very good copy in a very good- dust jacket with presence of the latter notably unusual. With Preface, Acknowledgements, several b/w plates including frontispiece on unpaged leaves, extensive Notes section (pages 499-536, Index of Authors, Index of Titles, Index of First Lines, and concluding page 563 list "Lullabies in the Negro Dialect" of which eighteen are included in the book but additionally citing six more which are not. Book's text is comprised of lyrics only without any musical scores. Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Company was inconsistent in its first printing identification but this copy is likely a reprint as there is only a date on the copyright page and not on the title page. There is a Lothrop edition of this book in decoratively stamped bluish-gray cloth and such binding embellishment would favor a true first.…
