Condition: Fine. xiv,103, [9]; [75], b/w + col plates, 1 large folding map. . HB + Slipcase. 2 vols + map in portfolio, 8vo, orig. cloth. Fine in vg slip case. Part 1, Memoir; Part 2, Coloured Illustrations of 72 Soils; Part 3, The Soil Map, Soils of the Parish of Haselbech (Northamptonshire) from 75,000 bores, folding coloured map 142x150 cm, prepared at the remarkably detailed scale of 1:2,500.A scarce detailed record of a twenty-year programme of field soil survey, representing an important document in the history of British soil science and agricultural survey. The survey records the soils of the Northamptonshire parish of Haselbech in extraordinary detail, documenting seventy-two distinct soils through field observation, profile description and mapping. The study was undertaken over two decades, from 1954 to 1974, under the direction of Dora Kate Smee of University College London, with the fieldwork carried out by students. Its exceptional duration and unusually fine scale distinguish it from the generalized soil surveys more commonly encountered from this period. Rather than providing merely a regional classification, Smee's study offers an intensive examination of the relationship between individual soils, geology, topography, drainage and agricultural land use within a single English parish.
