Contemporary full dark brown leather; boards bowed with stains and bumping/wear at corners; cosmetic slender splitting o rear joint but hinge is firm; gilet lettering of spine's black title label dulled but legible. Interior leaves toned with some stains along with brittleness which contributes to some edge-wear at margins; a number of leaves have folded/creased corners; antiquarian ink signatures (mostly for a Robert Barnett and a Mary Barnett) on initial and rear leaves along with some other antiquarian writing by similar hands; several antiquarian ink marks among book's concluding "List of Subscribers" (pages 245-256) which cites approximately 503 subscribers in Kentucky and Tennessee which is a healthy print run in early 1800s Trans-Appalachia West which was still very much frontier (a Henry Barnett is listed as a Shelbyville [KY] subscriber but cursory research could establish a link to the aforementioned Robert and Mary). Two quires - one preliminary and the other at center - slightly pulled but binding otherwise remains firm. Kentucky's first printer was Virginia-born John Bradford who started the "Kentucky Gazette" newspaper in Lexington in 1787 and published the state's first book in 1792. New Jersey native Thomas Skillman moved to Lexington is 1809 and, per OCLC, his earliest surviving printing efforts occurred in 1811 and he continued printing books and periodicals until his death from cholera in 1833.
