The family letters in this collection cover centuries, from Thomas Trevelyan writing to his brother John in 1485 to letters concerning the management of the estate in the 1830s. No jacket.

The first volume (Hampshire I) appeared in 1900 and new volumes continue to be published, now much improved and updated, but remaining comprehensive, factual, reliable and unbiased reference works, based on original research. Volume X covers Castle Cary and the Brue-Cary watershed, with a section devoted to the history, landownership, local government and religious history of Castle Cary and histories of nine ancient parishes of the Catsash Hundred. In our modern world we are accustomed to our daily life being relatively unchallenging in terms of the environment we face every day. Today we must journey further afield to encounter Nature's savage beauty. This book, however, reminds us all that, in the past, landscapes like Exmoor presented formidable challenges to those who lived and worked in them. Spectacular weather events were undoubtedly a rarity, but Exmoor has thin soils, high rainfall and still suffers from poor communications - all of these factors combine to make farming, or even just living, on Exmoor a harsh and uncomfortable experience.
