The story begins in the 1880s, at the time of the South African gold rush, when the young Fitzpatrick worked as an ox-wagon transport rider in the old Transvaal. There he came across a man who was in the process of drowning a puppy - the runt of the litter. Percy saved the dog and the story of his ever-faithful and loving companion was born. The original illustrations drawn by Edmund Caldwell appear in this edition.

Jock of the Bushveld is a true story by South African author Sir James Percy FitzPatrick. The book tells of FitzPatrick's travels with his dog, Jock, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross during the 1880s, when he worked as a storeman, prospector's assistant, journalist and ox-wagon transport-rider in the Bushveld region of the Transvaal (then the South African Republic). Sir James Percy FitzPatrick, KCMG (24 July 1862 - 24 January 1931), known as Percy FitzPatrick, was a South African author, politician, mining financier and pioneer of the fruit industry. He authored the classic children's book, Jock of the Bushveld (1907). As a politician, he defended British Imperial interests before and during the Anglo-Boer War. FitzPatrick is responsible for the creation of the two-minute silence observed on Armistice Day. Ref CC 7.

There is a very small amount of water damage on the back cover and a short closed tear, 1/4 inch long, along the top edge. A heavy book - postage outside the UK may be more than stated.
