This is "Catalogue of Manuscripts and Other Objects in the Museum of the Public Record Office, with Brief Descriptive and Historical Notes" by Sir H. C. Maxwell Lyte, K.C.B. This is the 14th Edition of the Catalogue and just the sixth to be illustrated. We've shown a few of… the illustrations in the book. "The Public Record Office was the guardian of the national archives of the United Kingdom from 1838 until 2003, when it was merged with the Historical Manuscripts Commission to form The National Archives, based in Kew. (Thanks to Wikipedia for much of this.) In his Introduction, Sir Maxwell states the following : "The Museum of the Public Records Office is a repository of records, but not exclusively of of records of the Chancery. As late as the beginning of the reign of Queen Victoria, the national archives were scattered in some sixty different places, such as the Tower of London, the Chapel of the Rolls, the Chapter house and the Chapel of Pyx at Westminster, and the State Paper Office; but an Act passed in1838 had for its object the eventual concentration of them in one building, under one management." So - this Catalogue is a record of a collection with many diverse manuscripts and objects. Being the repository for official state documents, there are manuscripts appended with names out of history - royalty, Parliamentarian, military, scientific, and literary. There is much that is obscure, and much that is startling for the very large place in history such an object or manuscript resides. Hence the Domesday book is kept among the other things in this collection. There are Parliamentary Writs and Returns; there are letters (many to and from Royalty); there are Chancery Rolls, maps, portraits, treaty papers; statements that are startling because of their source (Guy Fawkes); there are many court documents (wherein some surprising signatures of literary greats emerge). He served as Deputy Keeper of the Public Records from 1886 to 1926, and was the author of numerous books including a history of Eton College. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- There is light weathering of negligible impact. Spine has creasing (some of which may be production related); spine extremities are a bit chipped; front cover display some stress-related modest surface irregularities extending from the spine (not egregious in nature); front cover has mild surface rub, being clean, clear and attractive; cover edge wear consists of nicks to the bottom edge; fore-edge corner tips are bumped, with attendant creasing; rear cover has slight toning, else is clean and clear - there is a small scrape about 2 1/2" down from the top, near the fore-edge; slight nicking to bottom edge near spine; soft bumps to fore-edge corner tips BINDING -- Solid - no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR -- Matte paper is slightly toned. Some of the calendered leaves has mild, near-negligible, shallow surface wrinkling; there may be a few spots or smudges, but nothing jumps out, the interior being clean and attractive with no marking, marginalia or underlining, and no signatures.
