Their perilous race to the South Pole claimed Scott's life and became the stuff of legend as well as endless scrutiny. In this compelling biography of Captain Scott and his fatal journey, renowned modern-day explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, holder of ten expeditionary records, has written what is sure to become the definitive book on this hotly debated subject. Condition: Fair. In November 1992 Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Michael Stroud set out to achieve what no one had ever done: to walk and ski - unsupported - the 2700km across the Antarctic, a continent almost devoid of life, in temperatures of -45 degrees centigrade. They walked an average of 35km a day, surviving on what they could carry or haul. Fiennes developed a severe infection in his foot - so severe that antibiotics failed to work. Their food supplies ran dangerously low, and they battled against heavy winds which whipped their sledges out of control. At one point Stroud fell into a crevasse and Fiennes dragged him out before he froze to death. They pushed on, and after 95 days - the longest-ever unsupported polar journey - the pair radioed to be picked up, their journey having raised thousands of pounds for multiple sclerosis research. Containing many of Fiennes's photographs, this book is his account of the expedition.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1997 a journal is found in an all weather shelter in Antarctica. Travelling back to England the finder reads an extraordinary story of depravation, war, survival and the thirst for revenge. It is the autobiography of Dirk, who as a child was an inmate of the Nazi concentration camps where he saw his mother horrifically abused, particularly by one man. Unlike his mother, he survives the camps and the death march to be brought up in Canada. There, as a young man forging a career in the environment movement, he comes across the same man. The meeting unblocks the suppressed memories of his childhood and Dirk savours the heady flavour of revenge. He is co-opted by 'The Secret Hunters' and with dogged patience they track their prey through a web of intermediaries, discovering that he and his cohorts believe they can re-establish the fascist state. On a secret mission to mine valuable minerals in the Antarctic Dirk confronts him. The result is deadly - but for which man.…
