Illustrated by 41 pages of black and white photographic plates, including frontispiece, and by 33 text figures. Complete in itself, but the first part of a two volume set, first published 1917-21. It contains seven essays (two of them by the editor), on subjects including Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Vitalism, Early Renaissance Anatomy and the Witch Mania, etc. Charles Joseph Singer (1876-1960) was a historian of science, technology and medicine, known for his edited work, A History of Technology in five volumes (1954-58). A fine clean copy.
