It contains seven essays (two of them by the editor), on subjects including Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Vitalism, Early Renaissance Anatomy and the Witch Mania, etc. Charles Joseph Singer (1876-1960) was a historian of science, technology and medicine, known for his edited work, A History of Technology in five volumes (1954-58).
