Molti artisti Pop italiani hanno attinto al repertorio dei modelli antichi, penso in particolare a Tano Festa e alle sue gioiose interpretazioni di Michelangelo. In Piccoli non c'è niente di divertente, al contrario si respira un'aria tetra, da Controriforma, forse suggestionata dall'uso esclusivo del colore nero. Solo nel Ritratto di Pace Rivola Spini si percepisce un'ombra di rosso. Da qualche tempo Piccoli è sedotto dal nero e dalle sue sfumature. I meandri di questo colore lo soggiogano nel profondo. (S. Facchinetti) Da una posizione di rispetto e d'interesse per il passato, il pittore si pone in relazione con esso da un punto di osservazione contemporaneo: la nobiltà del nero, di cui Moroni è stato artista prodigioso, diviene per Piccoli, che padroneggia la trasparenza con effetti raffinati ottenuti attraverso l'uso di garze che filtrano l'apparenza, il simulacro della ritrattistica moroniana.
