Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition - published in Walter Scott's Great Writers Series, edited by Eric Robertson and Frank T. Marzials. ***Very good in burgundy cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and a small decoration to the spine. Top edge of the page block gilt - still nice and bright. Lower edge of page block rough-cut (untrimmed). Extremities and corners of boards slightly worn. Corners slightly bumped. Bumps to top and outer edge of front board. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Interior pages near fine with no inscriptions, just a few light pencil notes to the rear endpaper and pastedown. Pages nice and clean. No creases or tears. ***174mm x 124mm. 194 pages including a detailed Index, plus a very comprehensive bibliography of 44 pages, and a 14 page publishers' catalogue at the back of the book. ***A very nice Victorian edition of the life of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, printed on nice quality paper, in very nice original condition. The publisher's catalogue has some interesting content, including 'Manuals of employment for educated women - the object of this series of manuals will be to give to girls, more particularly to those belonging to the educated classes, who from inclination or necessity are looking forward to earning their own living, some assistance with reference to the choice of a profession, and to the best method of preparing for it when chosen - I. Secondary teaching, II. Elementary teaching, III. Sick nursing, IV. Medicine'. An interesting social history snapshot. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
