Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. A large folio edition of The History of the Old and New Testament by Sieur de Royaumont, published in London in 1699. This is the second edition, corrected, and is extensively illustrated with 234 engraved plates depicting biblical scenes, together with three maps, incl…uding a large folding map. The engravings are finely executed and include work by noted late 17th-century engravers such as Michael van der Gucht and others associated with this edition. The volume is bound in later full red leather, with raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine. The binding shows noticeable rubbing, surface wear, scuffing, and wear to corners and edges, consistent with age and handling. Despite this, the binding remains sound and structurally solid. Internally, the work is complete, with all 234 engravings and all three maps present. There is moderate to heavy foxing and age toning throughout, along with occasional staining, including to the title page and some leaves. The paper shows expected age-related wear, but the text and engravings remain clearly legible throughout. A substantial late 17th-century illustrated biblical work, notable for its large format and extensive engraved content. Michael van der Gucht (illustrator).

Full Brown Calf (Leather Binding) with five raised bands to spine and with brown moroccan title label lettered in gilt to the second compartment to spine,other compartments to spine and decorated in blind with gilt date to the base of spine of 1691.With marbled endpapers,tape streng…thening applied to the front gutter hinge join.There is one former owner's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown and one ink inscription to the blank front endpaper.Red ruled borders to the tilte page and red lined underneath the text and the text and plates are enclosed within vibrant red borders.The book has survived remarkably well and is illustrated with some 234 engraved plates many of which are double sided and illustrated with eminent engravers of the day and they are highly dynamic and atmostpheric sculptures.There are two wonderful folding maps the first of which depicts the forty years travels of the children of Israel out of Egypt through the Red Sea and wilderness into Canaan or the Land of promise.This measures 24cm by 21 cm when folded out.The second map is of the Travels and voyages of the Apostles in their mission and in particular St Paul and this measures 45cm by 32 cm when folded out.All the page edges are in gilt.Of course there is some rubbing present to the boards edges with a small repair looks to have been made to the bottom right corner of the front cover.Binding remains firm with NO loose leaves.The contents remain very clean with an odd foxing spot or thumbing mark set within the text.Gilt lined borders to the outer boards.Scarce in this condition 8vo 424pp [1691].

A very rare family name in the UK with references here to the Wisbech area. Only 31 people have this surname in the world. The eminent botanist William Skrimshaw [1766-1829] son of the elder William has his birth recorded on the front end-paper as March 11th.

Very good condition, recently rebound in the style of the late 17th century in brown calf with discrete tooling, spine plain with five raised bands and new end papers. Containing 234 plates and three maps as called for, The plates and maps are in good+ order, but some of the gatherings in the Old… Testament are bound out of order: 60/61 is followed by 66/67, 64/65, 62/63 and 68 then 69 is followed by 74/75, 72/73 70/71 and 76 but both the plates and their accompanying text are adjacent to each other. Damage and considerable loss to pp 123/124 otherwise text clean and bright. On the reverse of the frontis piece in a seventeenth/eighteenth century hand a statistical account of the Bible - numbers of chapters, verses, words and letters (total 3,566,480) etc. etc. - a note at the end says "Three years was taken to complete this account" (probably the work of Thomas Addenbrooke) the frontis piece is by G. Freman engraved by J. Kip, the printed title page has the first or early ownership of Thomas Addenbrooke (the following page gives a list of the sculptures and discourses with the names of the patrons of same, the dedication by Richard Blome is to the Worshipful Jeffrey Jeffreys, followed by the Preface to the Reader, in all 10 pages of unpaginated front matter followed by 424 pages paginated (illustrations not included in pagination).
