8ş: 3-11 [1] 292 pp. Origineel karton (voorplat los), literatuur: Saalmink II, p.1778 Kollewijn, Bilderdijk, zijn leven en zijn werken (Amsterdam 1891) II, p.259-269; Mathijsen, 'Spelling in de negentiende eeuw: Siegenbeek en Bilderdijk', in: De Negentiende Eeuw 12 (1988) 2; De Vooys, 'De taalbeschouwing van Siegenbeek-Weiland en van Bilderdijk', in: De Nieuwe Taalgids 25 (1931), p. 21-34 In 1801 had Siegenbeek de opdracht gekregen een spellingsregeling te ontwerpen die moest gelden voor alle zeven provincien van de Bataafse Republiek. De regering zag dit als een belangrijk middel om de eenheid binnen de jonge republiek te bevorderen. In 1804 werd de nieuwe spelling ingevoerd. Siegenbeeks grootste tegenstander op het gebied van taal en spelling zou Willem Bilderdijk worden, die vooral in zijn Leidse jaren ( 1817-1827) geen gelegenheid voorbij liet gaan om zijn afkeer van de Leidse hoogleraar en diens domme Siegenbekerij te laten blijken.
