Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. Sea-green cloth boards with black lettering. Thin dampstains along edges of endpapers, otherwise interior is clean and crisp. Dust jacket has large chip out of foot of spine (2cm.); a few other smaller edge chips. DJ in archival sleeve. 313 pp. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. Written during the First World War and originally published in the UK with the title Salt and Savour (Methuen, 1916). The story is set in the pre-war period and is about an English woman who has married a German man. She observes that throughout modern Germany a cloud of malevolent feeling is being aimed at the English and recognizes that the English would soon come to feel it. As the blurb on the dust jacket says, "The writer reveals to us the heart of Germany, lovable in some aspects, but chiefly sinister, hideous, a threat to the world." Cecily (Ullmann) Sidgwick (1854-1934) was an English novelist, born to German parents who were living in the UK. Not long before Salt and Savour was written, Cecily and her husband Alfred became part of the Lamorna Art Colony in Cornwall, having built their home there in 1914. Sidgwick had often written about Germans and German culture, but during the war (which had a devastating effect on Lamora), her pen took a vituperative turn.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the relationship between a young English student and a renowned German professor, offering a glimpse into the world of academia and the bonds that form within it. It explores the complexities of mentorship, friendship, and the unexpected ways in which these connections shape our lives. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of late 19th-century Germany, a time of intellectual and scientific upheaval. The author paints a vivid picture of academic life, with its rigorous study, passionate debates, and the pursuit of knowledge. Through the lens of the central characters, the book examines the nature of scientific inquiry, the allure of discovery, and the sacrifices that may be required in the name of progress. Beyond its exploration of the academic realm, this book also delves into themes of personal growth, identity, and the human condition. As the young Englishman navigates his new surroundings and grapples with his own ambitions, the story touches on the challenges of adapting to a foreign culture, the search for belonging, and the complexities of familial relationships.
