Una delle eredità più durature e consistenti della civiltà antica sono senza dubbio i marmi policromi, che confluivano a Roma da ogni provincia dell'Impero, oggetto di un continuo recupero e riutilizzo durante le epoche s…uccessive. In particolar modo, si suole far coincidere l'avvio dell'uso dei marmi ornamentali in età moderna con il pontificato di Paolo III Farnese (1534-1549), una prassi accompagnata dall'attività di eruditi e antiquari intenti nel commercio delle innumerevoli varietà riemerse durante gli scavi o recuperate dalle rovine romane. A concorrere nel definire il gusto è la scelta dei Medici di fondare nel 1588 a Firenze la Galleria dei Lavori che nel 1605 raggiunge il massimo splendore con l'avvio dei lavori di incrostazioni in marmo e pietre dure della Cappella dei Principi in San Lorenzo, luogo deputato della magnificenza e dell'autoaffermazione dei Granduchi. Su questo esempio si diffonde l'uso di commettere i marmi tra loro, dalla scala monumentale fino a quella più minuta dei piani di tavoli, scrigni e stipi ambiti dai grand tourists e doni diplomatici per eccellenza. Il presente volume intende investigare le varie declinazioni di questo fenomeno perdurante e di offrire nuove prospettive di ricerca: attraverso l'analisi delle fonti e di casi di studio specifici si delineano le dinamiche del mercato e le inflessioni del gusto in età moderna, disegnando una mappa che dall'epicentro romano si diffonde nei maggiori centri artistici italiani, da Genova, a Torino, a Napoli, fino alla lontana Inghilterra.
