Foreword by R R Marett. First edition. Reverend Denys Shropshire (often credited as D. W. T. Shropshire) was an Anglican priest, missionary, and anthropologist who focused extensively on the peoples of Southern Africa during the early-to-mid 20th century. He was a member of the Community of the Resurrection (CR), an Anglican religious community, and lived for a period at the House of the Resurrection in Mirfield, Yorkshire. Shropshire combined his missionary activities with formal anthropological research. He pursued advanced studies at the University of Oxford, where he completed a doctorate (D.Phil) in anthropology. His work primarily investigated the intersections between native African laws, religious beliefs, marriage customs, and the influence of European legal and Christian systems. This book is the outcome of the author's experience in the Mission Field in Africa. He received his degree in 1926 from Exeter. An analysis of the religious institutions and traditional beliefs of the Southern Bantu people, written specifically to address the structural problems faced by Christian missionaries.
