Back of Postcard: [Postage stamp:] ONE PENNY (with profile of King George V) Circular cancellation stamp: MARGATE 6.45 PM 27 AU [August] 1923 Left Side (Correspondence): Dear Ralph. Just arrived in Margate to have a look round not so nice as Ramsgate & not so many people here. Hope all are well Love to all. Eddie THIS SIDE FOR ADDRESS Mr. R. Love 149 Wendover Rd Staines Middx Left Margin (Vertical Text): Enter-Art Co., Florence House, Barnes, London, S.W. "COMIQUE" Series. No. 3220. British Manufacture Throughout. The acronym "N.S.E. & W. RLY" stands for the North, South, East, & West Railway - a fictional railway line created as a joke, implying that the traveler has been sent for a long ride all over the compass. Homeville: a play on words meaning "the town where I live," Middle front: "Aaron Isaacs (8 Marine Parade)" is a mock pawnbroker shop's receipt for a "Silver Watch" for "0. 10. 0" (10 shillings), Modern purchasing power: c. £40 ($50) used to fund the remainder of the trip. Marine Parade is a very common seaside street name in UK resort towns like Margate, making the fake business address look real. Royal Hotel: A generic, grand-sounding hotel name used to contrast with John Smith needing to pawn his watch just to pay the hotel bill. Back Side: Margate: A popular, real seaside resort town in northeast Kent, England, situated on the isle of Thanet. Eddie sends the postcard from here, noting it is "not so nice as Ramsgate & not so many people here." Ramsgate: Margate's neighboring historic coastal resort town, located just a few miles south on the same coastline. Staines, Middlesex (Middx): The real geographic destination where the recipient, Mr. R. Love, lived. It is an historic market town on the River Thames, just west of Greater London. The card belongs to the sought-after "COMIQUE" series produced by the Enter-Art Co / Inter-Art Co. It has social history and postal history value: crisp postmark from Margate with the intact King George V one-penny stamp. Historical records confirm that Ralph Love lived at 149 Wendover Road, Staines, Middlesex. The postcard is addressed affectionately to "Dear Ralph", with the closing line sending "Love to all," indicating a close family connection or warm friendship with the household. The Sender, Eddie, was the traveler visiting the Kent coast in August 1923. Historical electoral registers and municipal records from Staines reveal that Ralph Love shared his residence on Wendover Road with his wife, Gertrude Love. The family name Allpress also emerges in connected residential records for this household, hinting that the "Love to all" sign-off was directed to a multi-generational household right down by the River Thames. Gertrude was born Gertrude Allpress. She married Ralph Love, anchoring the Allpress family name directly to the Wendover Road home. In 1920s British households, it was common for unmarried siblings, aging parents, or adult cousins to share a residential space. The presence of the Allpress family at the same address reflects this classic interwar multi-generational arrangement. Given that Ralph Love's wife was originally an Allpress, the sender "Eddie" was probably Gertrude's brother or close cousin (an Allpress by birth). The card is a lighthearted way to tell his sister and brother-in-law that he was having a spectacular vacation on the Kent coast and spending every last penny he had. While some media from the era relied on malicious antisemitic tropes, postcards like the one sent by Eddie is not. It merely tells a timeless vacation story: a traveler living beyond his means at the seaside and having to sell his belongings just to affor (illustrator).…
