Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [light shelfwear, a bit of fading to spine cloth, tiny stain at edge of rear fep]. INSCRIBED with a somewhat hokey gift inscription punning on the recipient's name and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, additionally dated 10/10/39 in his hand. Shippey was a popular Los Angeles newspaper columnist for many years, and also turned out a handful of novels (this was the third of four), set mostly in the fictional Southern California community of "Ourville," probably modeled after Sierra Madre, where he lived for several years. Like this one, the novels generally featured good-hearted but impoverished writers as their protagonists. A dramatization of this novel was presented at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1939, where it ran for 41 performances and set an attendance record. Signed by Author.
