Small dogears to prelims. ix, 190pp., contents clean and bright. George John Shaw Lefevre, 1st Baron Eversley PC DL (12 June 1831 19 April 1928) was a British Liberal Party politician. In this journal he recounts "the dispute between Lord Clanricarde and his tenants in Galway and the methods of coercion carried out under the Act of last year in that district". Lord Clanricarde (Hubert de Burgh-Canning) was unmourned in Ireland, where he had a reputation as one of the worst and most repressive absentee landlords in the country. His estate centred on Portumna, County Galway, with rents paid by 1,900 largely poorly agriculturally equipped and housed tenants; he was a main target during the 1887 Plan of Campaign fought for fair rents by the Irish Parliamentary Party. Not common. Brown cloth binding, ruled; with titling on the spine in gilt. Clean text; vii, 272 pages; with an eight-page catalog in the rear. The Tit…le Page has the stamp of the "Cobden Club," a society formed in 1866 to promote free trade. Interestingly, it had its own publishing arm. Shaw (1831-1928) served in several administrative positions, as well as Parliament. Mild bumping, with one corner gone to a fray; the first endpaper is missing; small owner stamp to the half title and FFEP; tiny bookseller label on the front paste-down. A solid copy. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
