Sidney Shapiro aka Shabo Li or Sha Bo Li, was a Brooklyn Jew who in 1947 moved to China & was responsible for some of the most important Chinese-English translation work of the past 50 years, including some of the first work to come out of New China. Shapiro was one of only a handful of Westerners to be granted citizenship by the PRC; and the man who faced down death as a Western intellectual working in the thick of the Cultural Revolution. Cream dust jackets with sketches in brown, titles in green, kraft embossed slipcases. Dust jackets have very minor shelf wear, bit of creasing, short tear at top edges, one has a small faint stain on the front, one has chip at base of spine. Slip cases have normal wear. Books are clean and bright, first volume has some light pencil underlining in the introduction, last volume has small neat notation of when the reader finished reading, otherwise clean and unmarked.
