Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Two volume set with dark blue boards, the front ones lettered and decorated in silver. VOL 1: Front board has a 2 cm x 2 cm stain and rear one patchilly faded. Spine a little cocked, lettered in gilt and faded to brown; ink spots near top and a 1 cm tear to surface on rear hinge. Internally book[plate on front paste down and free end paper covered in paper cuttings; half title foxed. with neat signature; reverse of portrait frontis toned; occasional foxing in text. Pencil annotation on page 138. Pp xlviii, 372. VOL 2: front board similarly decorated in silver, with 5 cm x 5 cm stain in top left corner and 1 cm x 4 cm one top right; the rear one soiled with patches of fading; the spine rubbed, less faded and with white spots. Internally book plate on front paste down, press cuttings on free end paper, foxing to half title, with written name. 'Errata, leaf tipped in and page 1 foxed; occasional foxing in text. Pp xv + (1), 419 + (1). 3 maps in rear pocket with folding panorama.
