Accordingly, scholars are divided as to whether the latter or the former - philosophy or rhetoric - was the stronger influence in this type of writing. Roughly, each one of these two positions may be identified by the name of two German scholars, the authors of two influential books on the subject: Rudolf Kassel and Horst-Theodor Johann respectively1. Kassel advocated the pre-eminence of rhetoric, Johann of philosophy. Of course, I would like to make it clear from the outset that Im referring to consolation for the death of a beloved person, though there were consolatory speeches for several other occasions: for example, for somebodys exile, like Senecas consolation to his mother Helvia, for somebodys absence, like Porphyrys letter to his wife Marcella, and so forth. Even those scholars, such as Svoboda, who uphold the existence of a Senecan aesthetics, must recognize that our philosopher never poses the question of the nature of the beautiful, which lies at the foundation of any aestethics. The lamented Italo Lana goes as far as stating that Senecas pronouncements about art - and particularly about poetry - are never based upon criteria of aesthetical criticism, which is totally missing (p. 378). Lana considered Svobodas essay nothing but a mere list of all Senecan passages which could somehow be linked with aesthetics (p. 378). In fact, the mobility of Senecas ingenium often causes him to touch on a subject from different points of view rather than tackling it directly and systematically. It remains true, however, that Seneca often proceeds well beyond the moralistic approach, which was not only typical of his school but also of his own ostensible attitude. I believe that, if only intermittently and sometimes perhaps unwittingly, Seneca does exceed his own moralistic premises and attains original and in many ways surprisingly modem positions. I think I have demonstrated this in my books, at least as far as his literary theories are concerned. In this area the novelty of some of his positions always stems from the grafting of a serious philosophical approach onto the purely rhetorical method prevailing in the culture of contemporary Rome. Today, however, we intend to sketch a picture of a wider conceptual range, in which Senecas literary theories function as just one of several aesthetic elements - in other words to investigate his more general ideas about the beautiful in nature and art. He adds that, by the time he was writing this, he had attained the capability of reading a Latin text treating matters he was somehow familiar with, so that the expertise he had acquired elsewhere made him able to understand the language, rather than the other way around - that is, using knowledge of the language as a means to gain the information he needed. We may believe him when he says this is true, in spite of its seeming strangeness. Many of us may have experienced something similar at the beginning of our academic career, when we began reading books and papers in foreign languages we were not necessarily already familiar with, and soon attained the ability to find our way around texts treating subjects akin to those which we were studying ourselves. Studi virgiliani (Bologne, 1998), j'ai essayé de démontrer, de manière, j'espère, convaincante, que le long morceau du poème De consulatu de Cicéron, que l'auteur lui-même fait prononcer par son frère Quintus dans le dialogue De diuinatione, a été présent à la pensée de Virgile dans deux passages capitaux de son ½uvre. Comme on le sait, ce fragment contient le discours que la Muse Uranie adresse au consul. La première partie décrit la divinité suprême, désignée par le nom de Jupiter, selon la conception stoïcienne du pnevma divin formé de substance ignée, qui pénètre et vivifie l'univers. Cette vision cosmique fournit la base pour la connexion faite par la Muse dans les vers suivants entre des phénomènes précédents et des événements successifs, dont les premiers sont les signes prémonitoires: concrètement, entre les prodiges qui furent observés durant le consulat de Cicéron et la période qui le précéda d'un côté, et la conjuration de Catilina de l'autre. Il procedimento è chiaramente diviso in tre fasi. Dapprima la fattucchiera, che, come apprenderemo più avanti, si chiama Proseleno, compie alcune operazioni su Encolpio totalmente passivo; in seguito recita una formula magica, finita purtroppo in lacuna; infine chiede la collaborazione di Encolpio. Dopo di ciò constata di propria mano il successo del suo intervento - successo che, come il lettore dei Satyrica sa bene, si rivelerà del tutto momentaneo e illusorio. The first poem, recited by a cinaedus, has a countpart in the Sotadeans spoken by a gallus in the so-called lolaos Novel (POxy 3010), but differs in as much as it is presented as a solo performance, whose structure is marked by the recurrent employment of the trikolon. The second composition follows the pattern of the equivocal epic parody typical of Sotades. The Homeric theme is supplemented by irreverent nods to language and content of the Vergilian epic - especially Dido's episode -, overflowing also into the immediate context (the Sotadeans, Encolpius' speech and the Vergilian cento form a close-knit section of parodical tone). The composition's epic parody is enriched and nuanced through reference to erotic poetry -to whose repertoire the theme of impotence belongs- as well as by linguistic traits typical of spoken idiom and comedy's expression. Nella tradizione manoscritta, a dire il vero, non esiste nulla che faccia pensare ad una divisione del testo in due parti; tuttavia il Pithou, nella sua seconda edizione del 1587, separò i primi quattro versi dagli ultimi quattro con tre asterischi collocati in un rigo a sé, con un intervento che, allo stato delle nostre conoscenze, non può che essere definito congetturale, motivato probabilmente dall'apparente difficoltà di collegare il tema dell'amicizia tradita col topos della vita come teatro. Il Pithou fu seguito dal Bücheler, nella editio maior dei Satyrica del 1862, che riteneva che i vv. 5-8 si trovassero in origine altrove e fossero stati inseriti a questo punto da un interpolatore. Dopo di lui la divisione della poesia in due parti di quattro versi ciascuna divenne corrente nelle edizioni, che la evidenziano anche con espedienti grafici, e in molti studi. In queste pagine egli avanza anche un paio di suggerimenti nuovi, 3 ma, come vedremo subito, non dà al problema unimpostazione capace di aprire nuove prospettive e di giungere a nuovi risultati. Del resto, la questione delle influenze ciceroniane in Virgilio non ha mai avuto lattenzione che avrebbe meritato. Per molto tempo i rapporti fra i due poeti non furono fatti oggetto di studi approfonditi a causa del pregiudizio secondo cui ogni qual volta Cicerone e Virgilio (come Cicerone e Lucrezio, Virgilio e Lucrezio o tutti e tre i poeti) concordavano fra loro, la fonte comune doveva essere Ennio, e si escludeva che le corrispondenze potessero essere dovute a una ripresa diretta. In effetti la sfasatura, manifestamente voluta e ricercata dall'autore, fra quei versi e la prosa che segue non potrebbe essere più evidente, ed è sottolineata dal commento della stessa voce narrante, che sottolinea, senza l'interposizione di una sola parola di trapasso, l'infondatezza dell'esultanza espressa dalla breve poesia: sine causa gratular mihi. The Con-solatio takes a special position, in that it unconditionally accepts the immortality of the soul and eternal retribution, the alternative now concerning rewards and punishments. He seems to consider his daughters survival as depending from his efforts to this effect, and does not appear to expect a reunion with her after his own death. In the Divine Comedy Dante takes advantage of Ciceros Somnium Scipionis to describe his view of the universe from the Heaven of Fixed Stars, and in his Convivia uses the De amicitia andespecially the De senectute in order to prove the immortality of the soul. To do so, he presents as the absolute truth the arguments employed by Cicero to illustrate the positive side of the Socratic al ternative.
