Er war ein experimentierfreudiger Künstler mit einem grossen Werk, das sich oft zyklusartig weiterentwickelte und in dem die Gegenwart, die in ihren problemat. Aspekten dargestellt wird, ständig spürbar ist. Von der informellen Malerei (1968) kam E. über die Erfahrung mit Pop-Art (1970-71) und Konzeptkunst (1973-77) zu einer Gestenmalerei von grosser expressiver Kraft» (HLS).
