In particular, he wrote a series entitled Books for Boys, of which this novel is a part of. Griffin travelled and worked in many places, including San Remo, while working as a locum pharmacist. In 'The Treasure of Gems', protagonist Ralph Coombe sails from Bristol to Martavan, beyond the Ocean of the Indies, after being summoned by his Uncle Roger, a rich trader. The story follows their search for treasure and the many dangerous encounters they have along the way. With five illustrative plates, by British artist and draughtsman Ellis Silas.
