Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. SEEMAN, Ernest. "The Hand of Education in the South. A program of broad objectives proposed for the orientation of education in the Southern States along lines compatible with geographic need and the ideals of a planned society." (1933) "To the Educational Committee, and Honorable Hugh MacRae, President, of the Southeastern Council. 7"x4.5", 37pp. Original wrappers. GOOD solid condition, with the LC rubber stamp on rear wrapper and the 10mm perforated "LC" stamp on front wrapper. [++] Provenance: H.L. Mencken, who donated the pamphlet to the Library of Congress. There is a LC secretarial note stating the origin of the gift ("H.L. Mencken") and a date ("July 5, 1933"). WorldCat locates four copiesthree are in university libraries in NC, and one (a different version of this pamphlet) in the British Library. [++] Annotations on the cover may be that of HLMalso some red highlight scribble lines in margins here and there in the pamphlet. I've had probably 100 or so of these from HLM via the LC and maybe 15% or so were "annotated" in this waythe scribble lines. I assume that they are his because they are consistent through my experience and I'm pretty certain that no one else could have done that given the cope and extent of the affected pamphlets. [++] From the Civil Rights Digital Library (online): "Ernest Seeman was born in 1887 in Durham, North Carolina. He and his father ran Seeman Printery until 1923. In 1925, he was hired as the head of Duke Press, where he worked until 1934. After leaving Duke for his reputation as a radical on campus, Seeman lived in New York before settling in Tumbling Creek, Tennessee. His novel American Gold was published just before his death in 1979.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.".
