Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Boards rubbed and flecked with some marks and stains. Gilt lettering entirely rubbed away from spine. Rear hinge split at gutter. This copy has extensive underlining and marginalia throughout. The marginalia is neat, but as it is very extensive it will detract from the appeal of this copy to some, while others might find the marginalia itself to be interest. The marginalia is in green ink, red ink, and pencil. In their nature, the marginal comments repeat key-words from the text, such as names and dates and specific topics or what might be called keywords. They also include some cross-references to other pages in this volume. Folding map at rear also has some marginalia. Identity of the annotator unknown. ; Second edition (the first edition was in 1908). xxxii, 472 pages + frontispiece + 35 plates (each plate accompanied by a leaf of letterpress) + large folding map. Blue-grey cloth boards with red decoration on spine and front board, gilt lettering on spine and front board. Page dimensions: 247 x 153mm.
