Sein wissenschaftlicher Ehrgeiz galt vor allem der Erforschung mechanischer Gr…undlagen des Baus von pflanzlichem Festigungsgewebe.Schwendener studierte Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik in Genf und Zürich. Nach seiner Promotion arbeitete er als Assistent bei Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli. Nach beruflichen Stationen in München, Basel und Tübingen wurde Schwendener 1878 als ordentlicher Professor für Botanik an die Universität Berlin berufen, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1910 tätig war.Er verfasste Arbeiten u. a. über den Bau der Blattgelenke, den Saftstieg in Pflanzen sowie der Blattstellung. Seine Erkenntnisse über den Bewegungsmechanismus der Spaltöffnungen (Amaryllideen-, Gramineen-Typ) sind in die Schul- und Lehrbüchern der Botanik eingegangen. 134 pp. Deutsch.
