Pasha (1840-1892) was an Ottoman-German Jewish physician and naturalist, and governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria on the Upper Nile. The Ottoman empire conferred the title "Pasha" on him in 1886, and thereafter he was referred to Emin Pasha.Complete with the two tissue-guarded portraits of Pasha plus a large, folding coloured map (in excellent condition, with just one small blank margin repair. The text is in very good+, tight, clean condition. "Sutton 1889" inscribed on front end paper. Negligible age-browning. The brown cloth binding, with gilt titles and motif on front and spine, is in very good, tight condition, with very minor wear. 547 pages. See photographs of this actual book attached.

A collection of letters and extracts from journals written by Emin Pasha during his residence in the Egyptian Sudan. Emin Pasha (born Eduard Schnitzer (1840-1892), of German-Jewish origin), was a physician, naturalist and colonial administrator. In 1878 he succeeded General Charles Gordon as Governor of Equatoria, southern Sudan. The Mahdist revolt would cut Equatoria off from the rest of the world from 1883 until 1888 when the relief expedition led by Henry Morton Stanley eventually reconnected with Emin.
