Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. First edition and first printing. Hardcover. 158 pages. One of the best books to come out of the FSA experience, that shows the grim resolve and the conditions in the late 1930's dust bowl. Features text by Paul Schuster Taylor and powerful black and white images by Lange. An about very good copy in blue cloth boards with some light wear to the spine ends and corners and some foxing to the pages but with the rubberstamp ownership stamp of Henry Holmes Smith to the half title page and in a very good second issue dust jacket (Voltaire quote on the rear panel) with some small chips to the spine ends and corners, a small chip to the base of the front panel and some other edge tears and wear. Still, a solid copy of this classic with an excellent provenance. (Roth 102-103, Parr & Badger v1, 142-143).

First Edition. Quarto (26cm); navy blue cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; dark blue topstain; 158pp; illus. Mild rubbing to spine ends and lower board edges; faint ripple to bottom edge of text block; faintly musty from long storage; still generally clean, tight and Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper. With the ownership signature of Sol Libsohn (see note). Arguably the greatest American photo-documentary book of the 20th century, and certainly the most-quoted. Lange's masterwork is described by Parr thus: "Of all the documentary books stemming from the New Deal, and the FSA in particular, An American Exodus [.] is the most considered. Not only does it have the closest integration of text and image, but the whole book was compiled with scrupulous attention to the presentation of facts, without either hyperbole or undue rhetoric on the part of photographer and writer. This makes An American Exodus the most balanced of New Deal documentary books, and therefore a model for the genre." This a significant association copy, bearing the ownership signature of noted American documentary photographer Sol Libsohn (1914-2001), co-founder in 1936 of the Photo League, a highly influential cooperative of left-wing documentary photographers which, though it never claimed Lange as a member, certainly shared (and drew from) her aesthetic.
