Mit unnachahmlichem Rhythmusgefühl leitet der Gitarrist seine Mitspieler durch mehrere Jazz-Standards, ein Repertoire, das immer wieder neu erfunden werden will. Nicht um oberflächliche Zurschaustellung technischer Fertigkeiten geht es hier, die Virtuosität liegt vielmehr im rein Musikalischen, wenn die Stücke anfangen, leise zu atmen und man dem Weg der Improvisation gespannt folgen kann. Darin liegt das ganze Leben, play or die, aber ohne Pathos. Natürlich sind auch einige zupackende Klassiker dabei, am spannendsten wird es aber, wenn Schumann sich selbst überrascht: So schön, sagt er, habe er 'Autumn Leaves' noch nie gespielt. Keine Nostalgie, sondern geniale Musik im hier und jetzt.
