Add to basket2 parts in 1 volume. Original manuscript of an extensive history and description of the village of Broek in Waterland, written and richly illustrated with numerous drawings by Cornelis Schoon (1719-1778). The work discusses the jurisdiction and courts of Broek, its name, coat of arms and location, its principal buildings, commerce and trades, government and administration, and its history. The manuscript is written in a very clear and neat hand within frames of ruled lines in pencil, and is illustrated throughout with Schoon's own original drawings of Broek. The careful presentation might suggest that the manuscript was intended for publication, but Schoon explicitly denies this. On p. [9] of his "Voorberigt" he states: "Mijn oogmerk is niet om dese beschrijvinge door den drukpers gemeen te maken, en deselve, als wat fraaijs, aan de wereld uijtteventen ". Nor do the words on the title-page, "Door den selve vermeerdert, verbetert, en met eenige afbeeldingen versierd", refer to an earlier printed edition. As Schoon explains in the opening of his "Voorberigt", he had already written a much shorter, 41-page description of Broek in 1745. This manuscript was used as a source for the eighth volume of the Tegenwoordige Staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden, which explicitly mentions a manuscript description of Broek by Cornelis Schoon. Dissatisfied with the many errors in the resulting account, Schoon compiled the present, considerably expanded and illustrated version. The Dutch draughtsman and poet Cornelis Schoon (1719-1778) lived and worked in Broek. In 1766 he married Neeltje Cornelis Pater (1730-1789), who is known for her considerable wealth. Schoon was closely involved in the government of the village, serving several times as burgomaster and alderman (schepen). During the period in which he compiled the present manuscript, he served as burgomaster in 1757 and 1760 and as alderman in 1759; his name is mentioned repeatedly in the list of Broek's magistrates for the years 1746-1777 in the present work (pp. 296-303).The vellum on both covers is somewhat wrinkled. An occasional stain on the leaves. Otherwise in excellent condition.l Cf. W. van Engelenburg, Geschiedenis van Broek in Waterland (1907) (this manuscript not mentioned). Contemporary vellum with the manuscript author and title on the spine, red sprinkled edges. Manuscript written in Dutch in black ink on paper. With a hand drawn allegorical frontispiece by Cornelis Schoon, the title-page in red and black ink with a vignette, 1 double-page engraved map of Waterland and 2 profile views of Broek on 1 double-page leaf drawn by Hendrik de Winter. Further with several illustrations in black and grey ink by Schoon: 1 full-page map of the "Banne van Broek", 1 double-page plan of the village Broek, 6 full-page plates, 2 views of the church on 1 leaf, the coat-of-arms of Waterland, 5 full-page plans of the church, 1 head-piece, 1 illustration in the text, and several head- and tailpieces. Pages: [12], [228]; [229]-341, [13] pp. …
