Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Here is " 'Among the Whores and Thieves', William Hogarth and 'The Beggar's Opera' ", Published in 1997 by the Yale Center for British Art. David Bindman and Scott Wilcox were the editors, and the text consists of seven Monographs by various authors. The book, a stiff paperbac…k Exhibition Catalogue, was published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Yale Center for British art held from February 1 through April 6, 1997. This is the First Edition, now Out of Print - OP. The Yale Center for British Art keeps a copy in their Reference Library. "John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera' was the theatrical sensation of 1728. Its underworld of prostitutes and thieves burlesqued the heroic visions of history and mythology offered by the reigning form of the Italian opera, as its simple songs offered a popular alternative to the Italian opera's florid arias and recitatives. Between 1728 and 1731, William Hogarth painted at least five versions of the scene from 'The Beggar's Opera' in which the imprisoned highwayman, Macheath, stands between his two wives while they appeal to their fathers to save him from execution." [This was excerpted from the Yale Center for British Art's web page on the Exhibition, for which thank you!] CONTENTS : * Hogarth's Paintings of "The Beggar's Opera" --- by Christopher Swan * Inscrutible Space: Hogarth on Stage --- by Jennifer L. Roberts * "Voluti in Speculum" : Spectatorship in William Hogarth's "The Beggar's Opera" --- by Romita Ray * Hogarth's "Beggar's Opera" Paintings and the Italian Opera --- by Diane Waggoner * Hogarth and Early Eighteenth-Century Punishment --- by Wendie Schneider * Hogarth's "The Beggar's Opera" and the Ideology of the Country Party --- by Andrew Jacobson * Hogarth, Boydell, Blake, and "The Beggar's Opera --- by Jessica Todd Smith SERIES : Exhibition Catalogue EXHIBITION DATES : February 1 to April 6, 1997 PLACE : Yale Center for British Art TITLE : Among the Whores and Thieves, William Hogarth and 'The Beggar's Opera EDITORS : David Bindman and Scott Wilcox INTRODUCTION : David Bindman IMPRINT : Yale Center for British Art / Lewis Walpole Library PLACE : New Haven, CT DATE : 1997 STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : Oversize paper-bound Catalog; size = 7 1/2" x 10"; color-pictorial wraps, glued ( on front) - on rear cover the illustration is monochrome - title printed in black on spine and front cover; contains numerous illustrations (mostly by Hogarth) produced in monochrome; contains seven monographs, an Introduction, notes [bibliographic and otherwise], for each individual essay; the Catalog of the Exhibition; 112 pages.
