The rich holdings of private and public manuscript libraries in Yemen constitute a unique laboratory providing ample material to engage a wide array of scholarly interests, ranging from historical anthropology and social sciences to intellectual history, Islamic studies, codicology, and the history of libraries. The present study highlights the great potential for future research that the available and for the most part still unexplored material offers, by focussing on Mu?ammad b. Mu?ammad b. Ism???l al-Man??r (1915-2016), one of the most prominent scholars, bureaucrats, and politicians of twentieth-century Yemen, and his private collection of manuscripts. Based on his ij?za ("licence to transmit"), his own writings, and other documentary materials, the book opens with a chapter discussing his biography and intellectual milieu. The remaining three chapters revolve around Mu?ammad al-Man??r's personal collection of manuscripts and the many handwritten comments and notes added by al-Man??r. The numerous purchase notes open a window onto the gradual growth of al-Man??r's personal library, and the additional information included in these notes provides insights into the ways in which manuscript codices changed hands during his lifetime (Chapter Three). Another striking feature of the collection are the codices al-Man??r copied in his own hand?while he had produced some during his student days, he copied out others decades later as a pious excercise. With respect to al-Man??r's intellectual biography and his education, the information contained in the paratextual materials often corroborates or even supplements what is known on the basis of other sources. Moreover, a number of codices in Mu?ammad al-Man??r's collection of manuscripts reflect the teaching practices at the mosque university (al-madrasa al-?ilmiyya) in ?an??? during the early 1930s. Some salient examples are discussed in Chapter Four of the book. Taken together, the volumesignificantly contributes to the study oftwentieth-century Yemen's intellectual and social history, and it immediately relates to recent work of historical anthropologists specializing in Yemen. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente. Paperback. Condition: New. The study of Islamic philosophy has entered a new and exciting phase in the last few years. Both the received canon of Islamic philosophers and the narrative of the course of Islamic philosophy are in the process of being radically questioned and revised. Most twentieth-century Western scholarship on Arabic or Islamic philosophy has focused on the period from the ninth century to the twelfth. It is a measure of the transformation that is currently underway in the field that, unlike other reference works, the Oxford Handbook has striven to give roughly equal weight to every century, from the ninth to the twentieth. The Handbook is also unique in that its 30 chapters are work-centered rather than person- or theme-centered, in particular taking advantage of recent new editions and translations that have renewed interest and debate around the Islamic philosophical canon. The Oxford Handbook of Islamic Philosophy gives both the advanced student and active scholar in Islamic philosophy, theology, and intellectual history, a strong sense of what a work in Islamic philosophy looks like and a deep view of the issues, concepts, and arguments that are at stake. Most importantly, it provides an up-to-date portrait of contemporary scholarship on Islamic philosophy.

Paperback. Condition: New. The articles brought together in this volume deal with Muslim perceptions and uses of the Bible in its wider sense, including the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament as well as the New Testament, albeit with an emphasis on the former scripture. While Muslims consider the earlier revelations to the People of the Book to have been altered to some extent by the Jews and the Christians and abrogated by the Qur?an, God's final dispensation to humankind, the Bible is at the same time venerated in view of its divine origin, and questioning this divine origin is tantamount to unbelief. Muslim scholars approached and used the Bible for a variety of purposes and in different ways. Thus Muslim historians regularly relied on biblical materials as their primary source for the pre-Islamic period when discussing the creation as well as the history of the Israelites and the prophets preceding Muhammad. Authors seeking to polemicize against Jews and Christians were primarily interested in the presumed biblical annunciations of Muhammad and his religion and / or in perceived contradictions and cases of internal abrogation in the Bible. These various concerns resulted from and had an impact on the ways in which Muslim authors accessed the scriptures.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Conversions often induced converts to produce literary outputs, such as autobiographies, describing the motives that made them to convert, or refutations of their former religion. Both genres are to be found among the literary outputs of the convert to Islam Samaw'al al-Maghrib? (d. 570/1175). His polemical treatise against Judaism, Ifham al-yahud, had a significant impact on the later development of the genre. Ibn Kammuna (d. 683/1284) rejected numerous objections raised in this work against Judaism in his Tanqih al-abhath, and the tract also served as a reference text for some later authors polemicizing against Judaism.Since the first critical edition of the text by Moshe Perlmann published in 1964 it is known that Samaw'al had written two versions of Ifham, the first completed in 558/1163 and the second in 562/1167. New manuscripts discoveries show that the earlier version was not replaced by the later but rather continued to circulate during the following centuries. It seems that in the East the earlier version an edition of which is presented in this volume seems to have been more widespread whereas farther West the longer version was apparently more popular.
