Schmidt held the famous and influential professorship of ophthalmology at Vienna. In 1801 he named iritis, the inflammation of the iris, and founded, with Himly, the first journal devoted to ophthalmology, the 'Ophthalmologische Bibliothek'. Die Entdeckung der Iritis syphilitica durch Schmidt und seine Verdientste um die Kenntnisse der Augensyphilis sind sein wesentlicher Beitrag zur Entwicklung der Lehre der syphilitischen Krankheitsformen. -cf.
