Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Das Buch gibt einen 1925 zum ersten Mal erschienenen Band der "bauhausbücher" wieder, ergänzt durch einen Beitrag von Walter Gropius, in dem er die Aufgaben und Leistungen der Bühne im Bahuaus und die eigene Versuchsarbeit als Architekt rekapituliert. Hier wird die künstlerisch und historisch überaus bedeutungsvolle Bühnenkonzeption des Bauhauses in ihren Grundzügen dargelegt. Die Bauhaus-Bühne, wie sie hier vorgestellt wurde, ist die der Weimarer Zeit. In den wesentlichen Zügen ist sie Schlemmers Konzeption. Er hat sie dem expressionistischen Theater, das 1921 mit Lothar Schreyer in das Bauhaus Eingang gefunden hat, konfrontiert und sich mit ihr durchgesetzt, nachdem er 1923 die Bühnen-Abteilung übernommen hatte. Im Keim reicht Schlemmers Entwurf in seine Stuttgarter Jahre zurück, ehe er ans Bauhaus berufen wurde, bevor es überhaupt bestand; Teile des "Triadischen Balletts", seines choreographischen Hauptwerkes, wurden bereits 1916 aufgeführt. Im gleichen Jahre 1923, als man die Bühnen-Werkstatt Schlemmer anvertraute, wurde Laslo Maholy-Nagy ans Bauhaus berufen, der sich vor allem für abstrakte kinetische und luminaristische Erscheinungen interessierte. Den Ungarn Farkas Molnár beschäftigte vor allem die Bühnenarchitektur. Der den Band vervollständigende Aufsatz von Walter Gropius ist 1961 für die unter dem Titel "The Theater of the Bauhaus" erschienene amerikanische Ausgabe geschrieben worden.
