Ingeniero y empresario alemán afincado en España desde su juventud, tuvo una relevante actuación en el primer año de la Guerra Civil esp…añola. Aprovechando su casi azarosa condición de Cónsul de Noruega en Madrid, desarrolló una amplia y vigorosa labor a favor de las derechas perseguidas en el Madrid Republicano, asilando a miles de refugiados y salvando de una muerte segura a varios cientos de personas. El testimonio de Schlayer en Diplomático en el Madrid rojo (publicado originalmente en 1938 en Alemania con el título Diplomat im roten Madrid) no es del todo imparcial pues sin duda era un hombre de formación conservadora y simpatizaba con las derechas de la época, pero sí resulta en lo fundamental verosímil e incluso verídico. A sus sesenta y tres años, y siendo extranjero, diplomático y alemán, nacionalidad ésta de la que en especial desconfiaban las autoridades republicanas por conocidos y muy razonables motivos, no era del todo ni previsible ni razonable que alguien como Schlayer se implicara de forma libre y voluntaria en una feroz guerra entre españoles, desatada por un levantamiento militar contra el gobierno legítimo y que estaba siendo protagonizada, sobre todo, por los más jóvenes de ambos mandos. Casi todo el mundo que pudo hacerlo, empezando por el Cuerpo Diplomático y el propio Gobierno Republicano, huyó o se quitó de en medio mientras que Felix Schlayer, al que nada obligaba o ataba, permaneció en Madrid con su familia. Su lucha no fue sólo en defensa de las víctimas de la violencia sectaria del momento, fue también una lucha en defensa de la más general dignidad humana. . El prólogo ha corrido a cargo del historiador Javier Cervera Gil, especialista en el Madrid en guerra y autor de solventes monografías sobre el tema, entre las que destacan: Madrid en guerra: la ciudad clandestina (1936-1939) y Así terminó la Guerra de España en colaboración con Ángel Bahamonde Magro.
