Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Bashline, L. James & Saults, Dan (eds.); Harrison, George H. (art dir.). America's Great Outdoors: The Story of the Eternal Romance Between Man and Nature. Chicago: J.G. Ferguson Publishing Company, 1976. First edition. Quarto (11.25 x 8.75 in). Bound in textured tan leatherette with gilt titles and brown cover illustration depicting a campfire council; 368 pp. An expansive, illustrated anthology celebrating 200 years of American outdoor writing - from early frontier journals and naturalist essays to modern conservation reflections. The editors (of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life) curate selections by more than a hundred notable writers including John James Audubon, Ernest Thompson Seton, Theodore Roosevelt, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Robert Ruark. Lavishly illustrated throughout with over 400 engravings, drawings, and photographs, including 48 pages in color. Art direction by George H. Harrison; contributing artists include Ned Smith and Tom Rost. A monumental volume that captures the changing American relationship with wilderness, wildlife, and conservation - from the romantic frontier ideal to 20th-century ecological awareness. Condition: Near Fine. Clean, tight copy with bright gilt and crisp pages; mild rubbing to lower spine and corner tips. Includes partial dust jacket panels laid in (front and rear flaps with author photos and synopsis). Interior fresh and unmarked, showing light age toning to edges only. L. James Bashline (1922-1995) was a Pennsylvania-born outdoor journalist, editor, and conservationist whose work for Outdoor Life and other publications helped popularize ethical hunting and wildlife preservation. Dan Saults (1926-1998) served as editor and contributing writer for Field & Stream and authored several works on angling and wilderness travel. George H. Harrison, the art director, was an accomplished wildlife photographer and editor for National Wildlife magazine, known for his evocative imagery of birds and mammals in their natural habitats. Together, they created a definitive visual and literary tribute to America's outdoor tradition.
