Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'Manu was seated, when the great seers came up to him: "Please, Lord, tell us the Laws of all the social classes, as well as of those born in between."' The Law Code of Manu is the most authoritative and the best-known legal text of ancient India. Famous for two thousand years it still generates controversy, with Manu's verses being cited in support of the oppression of women and members of the lower castes. A seminal Hindu text, the Law Code is important for its classic description of so many social institutions that have come to be identified with Indian society. It deals with the relationships between social and ethnic groups, between men and women, the organization of the state and the judicial system, reincarnation, the workings of karma, and all aspects of the law. Patrick Olivelle's lucid translation is the first to be based on his critically edited text, and it incorporates the most recent scholarship on ancient Indian history, law, society, and religion. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Translations from the Asian Classics / UNESCO Collection of Representative Works, Indian Series. Trade paperback, xx + 125 pp. WorldCat confirms the original 1977 Columbia publication and Miller's dual role as editor and translator. This influential English rendering of the 12th-century Sanskrit Gītagovinda presents Jayadeva's cycle of lyrical songs concerning Krishna and Rādhā, in which erotic separation, longing, reconciliation, and physical love operate simultaneously as human poetry and expressions of devotional experience. Columbia describes the work as an important text of Indian literature and Vaishnava religious tradition whose songs became part of Indian devotional music and literature. Condition: Near Fine. A notably clean, tight example. Illustrated gray wrappers remain flat and attractive with only very slight edge/corner rubbing and minute handling wear;;spine appears firm without significant reading crease. Interior pages are clean, bright and supple, with no ownership inscription, highlighting, underlining, staining, or other markings. Barbara Stoler Miller (1940-1993) was an important American Sanskrit scholar and translator whose work helped make classical Indian literature accessible to English-language readers without stripping it of its literary character. She earned her doctorate in Indic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and became a professor at Barnard; her translations included Sanskrit poetry and drama as well as the widely read Bhagavad'Gita: Krishna's Counsel in Time of War. Her Gitagovinda became sufficiently important that Columbia issued the expanded 20th-anniversary edition in 1997 and described the translation as renowned; contemporary critical notices praised its ability to retain both Jayadeva's imagery and musical qualities. The cover illustration is identified as Krishna and Rādhā drawn on a series of palm leaves with incised lines blackened with ink, from a village near Puri in Orissa (Odisha). More unusually, the publisher states that the drawing was acquired by Barbara Stoler Miller herself in Chandannpur in 1973.…

Hardcover. Condition: New. Buddhism has a large corpus of scripture and The Lotus Sutra is regarded as the most important of the Mahayana Buddhism which spread in most parts of the then known world, including China, Korea and Japan, where it served as the basis of Tien-tai, Tendai and Nichiren schools, the latter now very popular in the West under the name of Soka Gakkai led by the famous Daisaku Ikeda. The work bears the character of a dramatic performance, the chief interlocutor being Sakyamuni Lord Buddha himself, consisting of a series of dialogues, brightened by the magic effects of a would be supernatural scenery. The work is interesting to the non-Buddhist also, because it reveals to him the reason why an Indian religion spread all over without the use of any kind of force, and so successfully.…
