Es wird angenommen, das Cyprian vor seiner Hinwendung zum Christentum eine Laufbahn als Rhetor einschlagen sollte. Dies hatte A…uswirkung auf seinen Stil, der z.B. von Prudentius, Ennodius oder Hieronymus hoch gelobt wird. So schreibt Hieronymus in "De viris illustribus": "Über seinen Geist muss man nicht viel Worte machen, da seine Werke den Glanz der Sonne übertreffen". Cyprian, der 252 den Christenverfolgungen des Valerian zum Opfer fiel, wird ein bedeutender Anteil an der "Herausbildung einer chistlichen lateinischen Literatursprache" (Wikipedia) zugerechnet. Die auch heute noch häufig zitierte Aussage, dass es außerhalb der Kirche kein Heil gäbe ("extra ecclesiam salus non est") stammt ebenfalls von ihm. Den Werken vorangesetzt ist eine umfangreiche Biographie sowie die beiden wichtigsten (neben seinen eigenen Briefen) Quellen zu seinem Leben: die Lebensbeschreibung des Diakons Pontius (Vita Caecilii Cypriani) und die prokonsularischen Akten zu seinem Martyrium. - Schöner, zweispaltiger Druck. - Vord.
