Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is "Wives for Sale : an Ethnographic Study of British Popular Divorce" by Samuel Pyeatt Menefee. The book was published in 1981 by St. Martin's Press. It is in hardcover format and is the First Edition. The book is now Out of Print - OP. Through…out much of English history, and well into the modern age, it was generally very hard, if no downright impossible, for the average citizen of low income to obtain an official divorce. This created a variety of solutions that are quite shocking, even considering the social environment . From the jacket blurb : "Addressing a bigamous and indigent hawker in the middle of the 19th century, Justice Maule declared, 'Sitting here as an English judge it is my duty to tell you that this is not a country in which there one law for the rich and another for the poor. You will be imprisoned for one day.' The judge's ruling was a wry acknowledgement of the dilemma faced by the man in the street, who was normally unable to obtain a divorce sanctioned by Church or State. For centuries such men resorted to informal means of slipping the knot of matrimony, one of which was selling a wife in the open market. "Wives for Sale" is a fascinating study of this practice, which developed its own traditions, rules and procedures. The author considers the causes and consequences of wife sales and the reaction to the institution of the courts, the press, and the public. He draws parallels between wife-selling and other contemporaneous social practices and beliefs and considers the custom as it was reflected in popular culture. As a scholarly examination of an informal institution, this book makes a valuable contribution to ethnography and social history; as an investigation into an ingenious and pragmatic social practice, the book is an intriguing study for both specialists and general readers." CONTENTS : * A Popular Institution * Jumping the Broom - and Back * Markets, 'Mops' and Middlemen * Connoisseurs of the 'Merchandise' * 'Roll up and bid. spited' * Signed, Sealed , and Delivered * The Huzzahs of the Mob * 'Where were the Magistrates?' * Smithfield Bargains * Peacock Feathers and the King's Shilling * 'Pay heed to my ditty' * A Custom Observed by the People TITLE : Wives for Sale : An Ethnographic Study of British Popular Divorce AUTHOR : Samuel Pyeatt Menefee IMPRINT : St. Martin's Press PLACE : New York DATE : (1981) EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : Trade Hardcover; contains 6 illustrations (which are reproductions of contemporary newspaper and broadside accounts; has a Preface, an Appendix, Notes, a Select Bibliography, and an Index; [x] + 336 pages; dark brown paper-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering stamped on spine; pictorial end-papers CONDITION -- BOOK : VERY GOOD -- JACKET : VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars and imperfections noted : EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are slightly compressed, else binding is solid, with good color and square corner tips; gilt lettering is bright; text-block edges show slight signs of use, but remain clean.
