Hardcover. Condition: Fine for age. 1st Edition. Black cloth with gilt sp. lettering and decoration, no significant faults to any volume, top edges gilt. Vol.1: f/piece with tissue guard + xliv + 382, only fault is slightly ragged section ofouter edge of leaf xliii/xliv apparently due to a clumsy opening or possibly production fault, associated tear now closed with tear repair tape.Unclipped jacket, generally clean, has numerous edge nick and chips not affecting text, a few wrinkles to sp. which is also very slightly tanned. Vol.2: f/piece with tissue guard + 392; no obvious faults. Unclipped jacker generally clean, far less edge damage than Vol.1, sp. sl. tanned. Further Vol.: xx + 381; no obvious internal faults, jacket as Vol.1, , no sp. rippling but tanning heavier. Although jackets are far from perfect they remain VG for age in my judgment and are very scarce, will add protective sleeves when ordered. Also, slipped in, two newspaper clippings, one late 1930s, one 1945, of little obvious relevance, one indeed being an advert for black jumpers to wear with your jewels (1930s), the smaller 1945 one being a photo of Wotton church which had an association with John Evelyn. In addition there is an utterly irrelevant black 1939-dated form 'Conditions of Service in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary' ! (These now in film-fronted sleeve.) Weighs 2.5 kg unpacked so allow for additional postage especially outside UK. 15 cm x 21.5 cm x 9 cm set thickness.

A smart two volume set of the first edition of this collection of correspondence from English diarist Samuel Pepys. Two volumes complete. A collection of the private correspondence and papers of Samuel Pepys, an English writer and Tory politician best remembered today for the diary he kept for almost a decade. The detailed private diary was kept from 1660 until 1669 and is one of the most important primary sources of the Stuart Restoration. This collection of miscellaneous papers comes from the possessions of Pepys' great-great nephew Samuel Pepys Cockerell, an English architect. Edited by Joseph Robson Tanner, an English historian and expert on Samuel Pepys. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrappers are smart with light wear and sunning to the extremities. The odd small closed tear to the panel edges with minor loss to the head and tail of the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers. Very Good. book.
