Wave optics and interaction of light at the boundaries are discussed to help understand light propagation in waveguides. Chapter 2 discusses the theoretical background of symmetrical and symmetrical waveguides along with a brief introduction to topics like coupled mode theory and frustrated total internal reflection. Prominent loss mechanisms in the waveguides have been discussed including absorption, scattering and radiation losses.
