Hieronymus vergleicht sein Vorgehen mit dem der Kartographen, die mit wenigen Strichen und Zeichen die Lage von Landern und Stadten auf einer kleinen Tafel darstellen und damit einen Uberblick uber ausgedehnte Gebiete geben. Ebenso sollen seine kurzen Anmerkungen einen Uberblick geben uber den gesamten Psalter. Die Commentarioli bieten jedoch nicht nur Erklarungen zum Verstandnis der Psalmtexte, sondern auch Hinweise auf das theologische Denken und die Auseinandersetzung mit den Haretikern dieser Zeit.
