References. Subject Index. Declining water quality resulting from increasing human population, expansion of industrial and agricultural activities, and projected climate change is a major global issue of concern of the 21st century. UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 has brought water quality issues to the forefront. The Goal 6 briefly states that international communities should strive to achieve universal and equitable distribution of safe drinking water. It urges communities to reduce water pollution, minimize release of hazardous chemicals and protect and restore water quality ecosystems. Contrarily, ecosystems are being mercilessly polluted. In fact, water pollution has now turned out to be one of the major causes of water inadequacy because it makes the water unfit for its intended uses. Nonetheless, a ray of hope is emerging in the academic world. Subjects related to environment and water quality are being introduced at school, undergraduate and post graduate levels to sensitize the people at the young age. Such an exercise will also help in equipping the future human resource for taking up the challenging issues of water quality. In this context 5th Dean's committee constituted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research has framed several courses on water quality to be taught to the students of agricultural engineering, agriculture, and horticulture. This books deals with the theory and laboratory exercises of one such course namely "The water quality pollution and management".

On the one hand per capita availability of this resource is decreasing because of increasing population, on the other large areas are being degraded. It is not only impacting production and productivity but also has serious environmental implications. While physical, chemical and biological properties together determine the quality of soils, testing soils for their physical properties has become an integral part of the assessment of soil degradation and design management strategies to maintain or improve soil quality. In fact, success of any research or management program in Natural Resource Management rests on testing soil physical properties. Soil physics, a branch of soil science that studies soil physical properties and processes, applies the basic principles of physics, physical chemistry, engineering, and meteorology to resolve practical problems in agriculture, ecology, and engineering. 'S0il Physical Properties: Standard Methods of Laboratory and Field Investigations and a State-of-the-Art compendium on measurement methods of soil physical properties. It is a companion publication of a previous publication of the authors titled Standard Methods for Analysis of Soil Plant and Water . The motivation to prepare this book has come from the fact that a number of manuals are available to address the need of soil chemical analysis but only a handful talk about soil physical properties that too only in a sketchy manner. The compendium is divided into l5 well-defined chapters, each chapter dealing with few interrelated properties. The procedures described in this manual reflect the current knowledge on soil physical tests. In most cases, more than one method of determination is included enabling the technicians and researchers to make a knowledgeable decision while choosing a particular method. A new feature of the manual includes guidelines values of various soil properties. It should help the analysts and readers to be able to interpret the results and make sound recommendations. The manual has been compiled keeping in view the need primarily of agricultural, engineering and environmental sciences laboratories. The author earnestly hope that the information contained in this book will be helpful to the technical staff of the soil testing laboratories in doing their day-to-day analytical work. Teachers, researchers, research students, field scientists and practicing engineers especially in the agriculture, engineering and environmental science streams will find this as a handy reference and text book for practical classes.

Management of Sodic Water. 7. Socio-Economic Issues.Annexures. Glossary. References.Subject Index. Land and water, the two crucial natural resources for agriculture, are decreasing as a result of burgeoning population of the country. At the same time, various forms of degradation are taking a toll on the productivity of these resources so much so that large areas have been taken out of plough. Current assessment reveal that already 6.73 million ha area has gone out of cultivation because of excessive salts or high sodicity and this area is likely to expand to 20 million ha by 2050 because of the faulty irrigation and drainage water management practices being adopted in irrigation commands. Of the current affected area, more than 50% is sodic in nature, which requires some kind of chemical amendment for reclamation. While our knowledge and understanding of the causes, nature and harmful effects of sodic soils have tremendously increased, availability of gypsum on account of environmental problems on its mining has caused concerns. Apparently, there is a need to push for other amendments especially the industrial wastes and publish the information in practical terms for various stakeholders. This book is an attempt in this direction. Taking into account the widely varying needs of the clients, the chapters of this book have been organized to include history, origin and genesis of sodic lands, basic principles of diagnosis, nature and properties of sodic lands, amendments, reclamation package and alternate land management. Since sodic water irrigation is one of the factors in the formation of sodic lands, a separate chapter deals with this issue highlighting the extent and distribution, chemical characteristic and management options for the use of sodic water. The economic analysis procedures and socio-economic issues of sodic land reclamation are included in a separate chapter with appropriate case studies. Since latest scientific information on new technologies with case studies is included, we believe that this book is an improvement over the existing books and is a useful addition to the literature on this subject. In our view the information contained in this book would be handy to field practitioners in the Government Departments and NGOs to plan and undertake large sodic land reclamation projects. Since the basic principles and practices have been very well elucidated, the book can be used as a text book in agricultural and engineering colleges. It can also be used as a source material in training programs being organized by various scientific organizations. We believe that the book would prove to be a handy reference resource to all those interested in sustainable irrigated agriculture for the food and nutritional security of the nation. (jacket).
